Department Summary

The Department of Dance and Theatre is housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, with approximately 400 theatre majors and minors in theatre. The Department offers a BA degree in Theatre with concentrations in Acting, Design/Technology, and Theatre Studies, as well as Theatre Teacher Certification, and minors in dance and in theatre. The vibrant undergraduate program delivers a rigorous theatre education within a liberal arts context. The Department produces a full season of 5-6 productions as well as several laboratory events directed by faculty, guest artists, or students. Additionally, UNT Theatre is committed to hiring guest artists to engage with students and faculty.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

The Department of Dance and Theatre at the University of North Texas invites applications for a full-time, one-year visiting lecturer position in theatre production and design and management to begin in Fall 2024. The position of Visiting Lecturer comes with full benefits. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a 4/4 teaching load (which includes construction for departmental productions). The individual in this position will have to understand every aspect of the production process from script development to the actor in auditions, to complicated technical maneuvers during the run of the show. The candidate will also mentor and supervise student stage managers assigned to the various dance and theatre productions, and assist with technical rehearsals and strikes. The candidate will collaborate with performance, dance, design/tech faculty and guest artists; serve as stage management advisor; serve on the department’s Production Committee (on a rotation basis); and serve as theatre production manager (on a rotation basis). The candidate must hold an MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in theatrical technology and design, or a related discipline. Courses to be taught include, but not limited to, Introduction to Theatrical Design, Stage Production 1-III, Stage Management I & II, the design/tech capstone course, and other courses within the candidate’s field of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate must hold an MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in theatrical technology and design, or a related discipline and demonstrate evidence of teaching Stage Production I-III, Stage Management I & II, introduction to theatrical design, and the design/tech capstone course; demonstrate skills in budgeting, organization, and collaboration; and demonstrate an interest in recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications

Work experience in professional theatre; work experience in various production genres.
