Job Description
Retail Services Supervisor - Bookstore Illini Union Job Summary Assists in the training, development, and supervision of Illini Union Bookstore student staff and supports store leadership in all day-to-day operations.
Duties & Responsibilities - 1. Train / Supervise Students: a. Supervise staff and student employees as directed by store leadership. b. Assign work and evaluate work performance. Create daily work task lists for students to complete, follow up to ensure proper completion. c. Develop training materials and conduct training sessions with current and new employees, and cross-train employees across multiple departments. Assist in creating student schedules.
- 2. Customer Service - In Person / Phone / Email / Internet: a. Model outstanding customer service expertise on the sales floor, assisting customers with their purchases and fielding product questions from both individual and departmental customers. b. Assist in resolving customer service issues and solve problems in conjunction with store leadership.
- 3. Product / System Knowledge / Special Promotion Merchandising / Stocking / System Knowledge: d. Assist in merchandising and maintaining non-textbook products, including stocking and replenishing, creating visual product displays, and other merchandising activities. e. Assist store leadership in maintaining the accuracy of product information in-store and online and communicate new product information to buyers and customers. f. Make educated recommendations regarding special promotions, products, marketing needs or other services.
- 4. POS / Operating / Closing Out Day: a. Responsible for operation of the POS system and maintaining the accuracy of the bookstore vault and cash tills as well as reports to Illini Union Accounting, store leadership and necessary outside entities. b. Responsible for taking readings of the cash register, generating associated reports, and securing the building.
- 5. Inventory Control / Cycle Count / Inventory: a. Assist store leadership in inventory control and management, data entry, and purchasing decisions. b. Assist store leadership in maintaining the safety and security of bookstore customers, employees, and inventory during business hours, including cycle counts. c. Assist in seasonal activities, e.g., annual inventory, special sales and event days including football game days.
- 6. Perform other duties and additional responsibilities as assigned to help further the mission of the unit.
Additional Physical Demands - Extended hours are necessary during special events, buy back and rush with required overtime, abbreviated lunches, and breaks.
- Position involves a great deal of moving throughout all areas of the operation. Minimum Qualifications 1. Any one or combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the following categories:
A. College coursework in business administration, retail management, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
B. Work experience assisting in the management of retail service operations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Supervisory abilities, communication skills, and be flexible in work habits and shifting priorities.
- Ability to work at varying paces and perform a variety of jobs with accuracy.
- Commanding knowledge of retail/customer service relations and willingness to perform those tasks in a friendly, efficient manner.
- Working knowledge of basic merchandising skills.
- Working knowledge of retail operations and policies, computer skills, and cash registers.
- Decision-making abilities and the ability to work independently.
- Possess the ability to acquire strong knowledge of University and Illini Union policies and procedures.
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3588 - Retail Services Supervisor position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 7/1/2024. Starting salary for this position is $19.71/hr. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
