APP - Bariatrics - Inpatient Management / Quality Improvement

Nebraska Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Advanced Practice Provider (APP) (Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Bariatrics Center provider team consisting of three surgical PAs, two ambulatory NPs, five bariatric surgeons and three bariatricians/endocrinologists. This full-time position is located on our main campus in Omaha, NE and will involve a mix of managing inpatients and post-op management with our Bariatrics population as well as managing our bariatric quality improvement. The candidate will play a critical role in helping to facilitate timely decision-making on the inpatient units for patients, assist our patients as they prepare to go home post-operatively, manage timely discharges, and educate staff on the inpatient units around care of the bariatric patient. The quality improvement work will include coordination of our MBSAQIP database and helping to maintain our Bariatric Center of Excellence status through required annual reporting and site visits that occur every 3 years.

Priority consideration given to applicants with post-operative management experience and interest/experience in quality improvement. Acute Care Certification required for NPs.

Shift Details:

  • Full time, 40 hours per week

  • Monday - Friday, no call

Job Duties: Provide comprehensive health care to individuals who are overweight/obese with or without weight related comorbidities. Provide continuity of care for our inpatient population managing admissions, transfers, ED and inpatient consultations, daily rounds and floor work. Perform comprehensive education for staff on our inpatient units around the bariatric patient. Help to manage medical decision making on the inpatient unit when physicians/surgeons are unavailable or in the OR but the inpatient unit has questions or needs direction. Determine appropriate testing and work-up based on medical history and symptoms as well as interpreting and making recommendations based off testing results in collaboration with a designated supervising physician.

This position will also be responsible for coordinating our MBSAQIP database, responsible for tracking and ensuring accuracy of patient data for the Bariatric Center of Excellence report that is required working in conjunction with the MBS medical director and the MBS reviewer. They will also be involved in at least one quality improvement project annually for the Center.

Required Qualifications:

Nurse Practitioner

  • Master's degree in nursing from an accredited school/college of nursing required.
  • Minimum of two years RN experience or equivalent combination of RN and nurse practitioner experience combined (two years of RN experience equals one year of APRN experience) required.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska or current compact state required.
  • Currently licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner (APRN) required.

Physician Assistant

  • Master’s degree from an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program OR bachelor’s degree with ten years of current active Physician Assistant experience and approval from the Director of the Office of Advanced Practice OR if bachelor’s degree with less than ten years current active experience sign a written agreement consenting to obtain a Master’s degree from an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program within three years from date of transfer or hire and approval from the Director of the Office of Advanced Practice required.
  • Ability to maintain Continuing Medical Education (CME) hours to meet State of Nebraska and NCCPA Certification by the National Commission of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) [Or if new graduate, eligible for certification and certification completed prior to beginning to provide care] required.
  • Currently licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Nebraska (or eligible for license prior to beginning to provide care) required.


Both Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant

  • Ability to function with autonomy and able to make independent decisions while functioning as part of a comprehensive team required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written forms required.
  • Ability to provide critical thinking and analytical skills required.
  • Efficient use of information systems, data processing systems, telecommunication devices, office equipment, and audiovisual teaching/education resources required.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow policy, procedure, guidelines and protocols required.
  • Flexibility and dedication to team involvement and supporting organizational goals required.
  • Familiar with patient care equipment as appropriate to specialty area required.
  • Knowledge of health care policy and societal factors affecting the delivery of care required.
  • Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) licensure required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required, must be from an American Heart Association endorsed program upon first renewal.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience working in post-operative management of patients preferred.
  • Past experience working with quality improvement
