The City of Mount Vernon is accepting applications for the January 2025 Academy. Start the process today by completing the testing through the National Testing Network (NTN) to join Mount Vernon's Fire Department and support our mission of helping people every day.
Application Process:
Candidates must complete an online application and questionnaire with the City of Mount Vernon to be considered. A current, valid CPAT certification is required and can be obtained from NTN or other licensed agencies. Proof of certification must be submitted with the application.
Vaccination Requirement:
As of August 16, 2021, all new hires must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before their start date. For accommodation requests due to disability or religious reasons, please contact Human Resources.
Salary Information:
Firefighter/Paramedic - 3rd Grade: $7,651.22 per month
Firefighter/Paramedic - 2nd Grade: $8,398.01 per month
Firefighter/Paramedic - 1st Grade: $9,330.55 per month

Department Overview:
The Mount Vernon Fire Department manages fire prevention, investigation, suppression, emergency medical services, and Emergency Management for the City. This year, firefighters will respond to over 8,260 calls. The department operates from three stations strategically located in the city and a station on McLean Rd, providing advanced and basic life support. Each station has designated equipment and personnel, including engines, ambulances, and support vehicles. The department functions with a paramilitary rank structure, with oversight provided by Battalion Chiefs and Station Captains.

City Information:
Mount Vernon offers diverse experiences across 1,920 square miles, from the Cascade Mountains to the Skagit River. The city is known for outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and kayaking, along with a vibrant downtown. Job Requirements:
Age: Must be at least 21 years old.
Citizenship: Must be lawfully allowed to work in the U.S.
Education: 90 quarter credit hours from an accredited college or university.
Driver's License: Must have or obtain a valid Washington driver's license within six months and complete the "Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention" program.
Academy Certification: Must obtain Firefighter I (FFI) certification upon completion of the Washington State Fire Academy (City-sponsored).
Necessary Certifications: Must have a Washington State Paramedic Certification or equivalent and be eligible for Washington certification by the hire date.
Additional Requirements: Must meet medical, psychological, and Civil Service standards and pass a Skagit County Paramedic knowledge exam and skills assessment. A CPAT certification must be obtained by October 27, 2024.
Selection Process:
Complete testing through the National Testing Network (NTN).
Submit an application to the City of Mount Vernon by October 27, 2024.
Qualified applicants will be invited to an oral board and assessment the week of November 12, 2024.
Candidates will be placed on a ranked eligibility register based on their scores from the written exam, oral board, assessment center, and Veteran's preference. Final scores will be posted around November 20, 2024.
The top candidates will be invited to a Chief's Interview the week of December 2, 2024.
Conditional employment offers will be issued after the Chief's interview, contingent upon passing psychological and medical exams, drug screening, background checks, and reference checks.
Anticipated start date is January 15, 2025, with the Firefighter Recruit Academy beginning on January 22, 2025.
The eligibility register will remain valid until November 2025.
