Work Location:
Hybrid work opportunities with some weekly on-site work in Boulder, CO. All positions must be performed within the U.S., excluding U.S. Territories.
Key Responsibilities:
Organizational Leadership:
Oversee all legal affairs, including directing outside counsel activities to ensure constructive, efficient, and cost-effective outcomes.
Anticipate and address legal issues, developing strategies and solutions for senior management.
Maintain independence and confidentiality while reporting to the Board of Trustees Chair.
Chief Legal Counsel:
Manage staff in the Office of General Counsel and Export Compliance, making decisions related to hiring, performance reviews, staff development, and departmental staffing requirements.
Make critical decisions on legal, contractual, insurance, and export issues with potential multi-million dollar impacts.
Determine acceptable litigation, contractual/legal liabilities, and risks for the organization.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
J.D. Degree and a bachelor's degree in business, science, or technical field.
15 years of experience in corporate, business, IP, and employment law, including 5 years in a supervisory or senior management role.
Experience in an academic/research environment and with government contracting, corporate governance, litigation, intellectual property, technology transfer, employment, ethics, export, and research security compliance is ideal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong team-building and leadership skills.
Ability to work with the President, Board of Trustees, and Senior Management to build trust.
Advanced knowledge of government contracts, ethics, regulations, and corporate contracts.
Expertise in U.S. and foreign patent, trademark, and copyright laws, and government licensing and disclosure requirements.
Skilled in risk evaluation and loss prevention.
Excellent communication skills and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
